Winter in the New River Gorge: Snow, Weather, and Where to Stay

December 7, 2025

We get this question all the time: “Is winter a good time to visit the New River Gorge?” Our answer is always the same—absolutely. Winter brings crisp air, quiet trails, and wide-open views you simply can’t get any other time of year. Yes, you can expect cold temperatures and the occasional snow or ice, but with warm layers and a quick check of trail conditions, winter hiking in the Gorge is peaceful and rewarding.

With no crowds in the national park and plenty of cozy accommodations in the Fayetteville area, winter is one of the most underrated seasons to explore the Gorge.

What is the weather like in the New River Gorge in winter?

Winter in the New River Gorge is generally cold, crisp, and surprisingly beautiful. Temperatures usually range from the mid-20s to mid-40s from December through February. Fayetteville, the small town adjacent to the Gorge, sits on a plateau, so the weather can change quickly. It may be sunny and clear one day, foggy or snowy the next.

Does New River Gorge get snow?

Snowfall is common but not constant. Light snow showers and occasional heavier storms can blanket the trails and cliffs, creating dramatic views, especially from places like Long Point and Diamond Point. Ice can form on shaded trails and around waterfalls.

Are the roads safe or plowed in winter?

Yes, the main roads on the plateau in and around Fayetteville are well-treated and regularly plowed in the winter. Some secondary roads can get a little tricky during snow or ice, but they’re easy to avoid. If you stay at Lafayette Flats Boutique Vacation Rentals, you can walk to restaurants, bars, and national park trailheads, often eliminating the need to drive at all.

Are the visitor centers open in winter?

Yes, Canyon Rim Visitors Center near Fayetteville is open all winter. Typically, Sandstone Visitors Center near Hinton is open on weekends. While the Thurmond and Grandview Visitors Centers are closed in the winter, the areas are still open for hiking and recreation.

New River Gorge: A Winter Wonderland

Spending time outdoors in the wintertime can be magical, especially in the New River Gorge. The crisp air is invigorating and the quiet forest enchanting. The rich colors of the Nuttall Sandstone – usually hidden by the lush forest canopy – stand out in perfect contrast to the blue skies. Whether you’re enjoying a sublime overlook, a quiet hiking trail, or a frozen waterfall, your senses are sure to be delighted.

Or stay cozy in your Flat and enjoy a pot of locally roasted coffee, a mug of gourmet hot tea, or bake sweet treats in your full kitchen while binging the Great British Baking Show on the complimentary Netflix account.
